  • Luke 2:1-21 WEB

1 Now it happened in those days, that a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be enrolled. 2 This was the first enrollment made when Quirinius was governor of Syria. 3 All went to enroll themselves, everyone to his own city. 4 Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and family of David; 5 to enroll himself with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him as wife, being pregnant. 6 It happened, while they were there, that the day had come that she should give birth. 7 She brought forth her firstborn son, and she wrapped him in bands of cloth, and laid him in a feeding trough, because there was no room for them in the inn. 8 There were shepherds in the same country staying in the field, and keeping watch by night over their flock. 9 Behold, an angel of the Lord stood by them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. 10 The…

  • For the record, I…

Who would go to a crowded room and pay to listen to a CD one time? You can’t pause the CD if you have to go to the bathroom or get a snack, and you can’t put your favorite song on repeat if you want. You just go in there and pay $5 to listen, and when it’s over, it’s over, and you go home disappointed because you wasted $5 on something you could have heard at home, and chances are you also wasted money on snacks and drinks that you could have bought elsewhere for a quarter of what you paid for them. Here’s the really crazy part: many people do this all the time, but instead of going to a crowded room and paying money to listen to a CD only once, they go to a crowded room and pay to watch a DVD only once. They can’t pause the DVD if they have to go to the bathroom or get a snack, and they spend way more than they need to for the snacks and drinks they get while they’re there. Worse still is the fact that the average movie ticket itself costs about a third of the price they could pay to…

Amazon Mechanical Turk is an open marketplace where businesses and individuals can offer payment for tasks to be done by large groups of people. These tasks are usually more suited to human beings than computers, and are distributed among a large group of people, similar to the way complex computational problems are broken down and distributed among large groups of computers. The available tasks include things such as judging the relevance of search results, separating the events that occur in a sentence and completing short surveys about behavior or perception of products or services. If your work is approved, your earnings are transferred within a couple of days to your Amazon Payments account, which is similar in a lot of ways to PayPal, and can be withdrawn to your bank account or an Amazon gift certificate at any time. Completing these tasks can be a lot of fun and is an easy way to make a little extra cash when you need it. But if you live with blindness or visual impairment,…

  • Before "Don't ask,…

Think of it like this. If homosexuals are allowed to openly serve in the military, where should they sleep? Should we house them in barracks with the gender to which they are attracted? Do we house them in barracks with the opposite sex because homosexuals are not attracted to members of the opposite sex? In that case, they would still be seen as the only woman in the men's barracks or the only man in the women's barracks. Maybe we should have “gay barracks” where all homosexuals are housed together? Then it would be seen as discriminatory, either against those who are housed in “gay barracks” or maybe even against those who are howsed in separate men's and women's barracks, because the people in the “gay barracks” aren’t forced to sleep separated by gender as heterosexuals are. Let’s face it, rules are for everyone, and no one should be excluded from following rules just because they behave differently and don’t feel that the rules should apply to them. Either things must be kept as…

  • Monopoly and now Uno

i've been hearing a lot about a Monopoly game that many of my Twitter friends are playing. This game is playable by blind and vision impaired people. Thanks to a number of retweets of information about the latest release of the client, I have found the web site and I have also learned that it runs on Linux as well as Mac and Windows. Upon visiting the site, I found that a game of Uno has been released along with the new version of the client. The client and both games can be downloaded free of charge at the RSGames web site. To all my Twitter friends who play these games, I’ll be joining you very soon.

This coffee tree grows in the training room at Counter Culture Coffee's headquarters at 4911 South Alston Avenue in Durham, North Carolina. The training room is also the part of the building where the coffee cuppings are held each Friday at 10:00 AM. Since I took the first picture of this coffee tree that I posted last week, I have learned that it is possible to grow them as houseplants. I plan to grow one or more coffee trees at home in the near future. I know I probably won't get much coffee from them, but they do look nice, being coffee trees and all.

How Low Can You Go? It all started about three years ago, when Freedom Scientific started throwing lawsuits around against its competitors who make screen reader and magnification products. This caused somewhat of a stir at the time, but it mainly died away, because well, companies do this stuff all the time, and I guess it's all a part of the game. I mean we see similar actions by Microsoft, Apple and other big companies who want to "protect their property," as they love to say, and for the most part, we just let it go after ranting and complaining for a short time and then continuing to buy their products, supporting their actions with our wallets. It seems somewhat unfair and even a little like bad business to us, but we generally don’t care, and we gave Freedom Scientific a pass on this issue as well in the beginning. But now, they have stooped to an extraordinary new low. First, on 8 June, 2010, Freedom Scientific sued the United States Government, namely the Department…

I was able to state the case for my position clearly and concisely, giving appropriate scripture references to support my argument. My opponent, however, was completely unable to state his position with any meaningful substance. I even challenged him to point out to me any scripture in any version of the Bible that would support his position, but he could only give me atheistic buzzwords like narrow-minded and interpretation, and effectively forfeited the debate to me by saying that he didn't have the energy to debate with me, and that I should unfollow him. Naturally, I did. Now for the real kicker. This guy says he graduated from Candler School of Theology! Is it true that I can, by the power of the Holy Spirit and His Holy Scriptures, defeat a Candler graduate? YES! AMEN! GLORY TO GOD! HALLELUJAH! I've recently heard a lot about something called TeamTalk, which is some kind of voice conferencing software. The best analogy to describe it seems to be something similar to IRC, but you can talk into it. Maybe it’s better to describe it as something similar to CB radio for the internet. Well, either way, several people I follow on Twitter use a TeamTalk server to chat. Well, I thought I'd take a look at the client software and see whether I can use it, seeing as I'm a diehard Linux guy and I don't like anything that would force me into using Windows. I first heard of this software about 3 or 4 years ago, and there was no Linux client at that time, but I thought I'd go ahead and take a look again to see what if any developments had been made. This is the story of my trials and tribulations while trying to find usable Linux voice chat software that is accessible to blind and vision impaired users. I'm seeing a very disturbing fad among businesses these days. It seems that more and more of them want us to pay for something they’re not selling. Sometimes, it seems, these businesses want us to pay for a product as much as a month or more before they plan to start selling it. Of course I’m referring to preorders. Get real! The company has nothing to sell, but they want us to buy on the basis that they will make a product available in the future. I just saw this practice from Apple and from Clearwire, both within the last month, but many other companies engage in this type of marketing all the time. Well, for me, seeing is believing. If I purchase a product, I want it shipped to me within 1 to 2 weeks, or I want to walk into a store, pick it up off the shelf, pay for it and bring it home. I don’t have the time or the money to spend on something that isn’t for sale at the time I make my purchase. You can show me all the pictures you like, but I'm not buying. Here's a thought. How…
