  • Kyle.tk is mine!

I've been waiting for this since June! Yeehaw! I’m a happy Kyle! My main website will now be kyle.tk and kylenet.tk will redirect until it gets no visitors. This blog will still be at thekyle.tk, and will probably remain at that address if/when I migrate to Wordpress.

  • It works!

The test of my TweaK API wrapper script was a complete success! So, since it works, I can go ahead and share the website. Anyone who would like to use my code to get the shortest link on the planet can go to http://tweaky.tk. The page there will give all the information needed to use my script, including a link to download it. If you have an account on Dlvr.it, you can simply add Tweaky as a 3rd-party shortener by setting the endpoint to http://tweaky.tk/wrapper.php?link=@URL@. Also, Tweaky works very similarly to the shorten function of the TweaK API. You can send an HTTP get or post request to http://tweaky.tk/wrapper.php with the link parameter set to the long link you wish to shorten. Tweaky will return only the HTTP response code, and, if the long link is good, the short link returned by TweaK. Enjoy the shortest links on the planet, courtesy of TweaK and Tweaky. Update The TweaK API and website no longer work, as they have been replaced by Freenom's Random Domains API, allowing…

  • The TweaK API…

I have finally been able to complete my TweaK API wrapper script. I had to nearly completely rewrite the code, because the curl_exec() function is disabled on my host, and although I am one of the server administrators, I felt it would be more secure to leave it disabled. Then, dot.tk’s “abuse and copyright infringement department” sent me a rather nasty looking automated form email telling me that they had cancelled the domain I was using for the script, because either the web address was inaccessible or it violated their terms and conditions. The problem with that is that they cancelled the domain name within 4 hours of the time I registered it, so of course it wasn’t even ready for use, and I was busy building the wrapper script, and hadn’t even written a basic index page yet, not to mention the fact that the DNS hadn’t even really had a chance to propagate. Well, as far as I can tell, that problem has been solved, and I was able to successfully validate my script as a shortener on…

  • I think an API…

It didn’t quite work. TweaK returns two links. The good news is I think I can fix it by making a wrapper API that will only return the first link. A search indicates that someone already did it, but I can’t find the source code for the script, and I want to be able to release the code into the public domain, which means I’ll be doing it myself. Looks like it won’t be too hard, but until it’s done, if you see a pair of my links on Twitter or StatusNet and you want to click it, just click the first one that looks like bcd34.tk. The second one that looks like tk./bcd34 doesn’t seem to work. In other news, since before the upgrade of StatusNet, my blog posts haven’t been reaching Identi.ca. I hope they get that fixed soon. I can’t seem to figure out where the problem is though, so I plan to eventually migrate this blog to Wordpress, of course hosted at HostingPad, so that I can just install plugins rather than dealing with all kinds of third parties to share my posts across my social…

  • Kyle's Featured…

Due to changes beyond my control, Kyle's Featured Store will no longer be presented on Saturday mornings. Also, the Kyle's Coffee and More link has been removed from this blog and from my website. The company that provided the shopping site that gave my customers cash back when they made purchases is no longer offering this service. I apologize for any problems this may cause. The same company does offer other possibilities, so check back for a new Kyle's Coffee and More link, or possibly Kyle's Coffee, in the future, as I may be able to sell the coffee I love so much on my own website. If so, the announcement will be made here, and links will be added where appropriate. The company behind this store asked for an unreasonable fee to keep it going, then completely vanished from the internet, and even its parent seems to be gone. Had I given them the money they wanted, I would have been screwed out of hundreds of dollars, and I seriously doubt that any customer actually received cash…

Over the last couple of weeks, my preferred hosting provider was plagued with many problems that were beyond the control of the administrators. Their main server mass suspended every account and then went offline completely. Then they brought another server online, but the nameservers never worked and there were a host (pun intended) of CPanel issues. However, on Monday, an entirely new server was brought online, and it’s working perfectly, and is faster than ever. I had switched over to another p2h (post to host) provider as a stopgap measure until HostMafia came back online, but the alternate provider had its own problems, including the fact that although my account was allowed unlimited addon domains, CPanel gave me an error on my first addon domain, saying that I was not allowed more than 0 addon domains. A support ticket has produced no results to this day, and the forum posting rules disallow bumping my ticket or even requesting that someone look at it in their live support chat…

I discovered this song a couple of weeks ago when I sang it at church. Before I heard it, I was told it was classified as "Southern Gospel, and wasn't sure I could do it justice, since I Rarely sing in that genre. But then I heard it, and I fell completely in love with it. Now, for your listening pleasure, I sing "Through the Fire." Enjoy, share and be blessed. • Happy Independence…

Today, here in the United States of America, we celebrate the brave soldiers who died so that we could gain independence from British rule. Because of their great sacrifice, a great nation was born. But also today, worldwide, it is as good a time as any to celebrate the Son of God, Jesus Christ, who bravely and willingly suffered the ultimate shame and humiliation and died so that we could all gain independence from satan's rule. Because of His great sacrifice, each one of us can be born again. Then Jesus said to the Jews which believed in him, “If you continue in my word, you are truly my disciples, And shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” They answered him, “We are Abraham’s offspring, and were never bond to any man: why do you say then, ‘You shall be made free?’” Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly I say to you, that whoever commits sin is the servant of sin. And the servant does not live in the house forever, but the Son lives forever. If that Son therefore…

  • We need time for God to speak to us without anything interfering. Often. Undisturbed. Constant contact with Him. We cannot live successful Christian lives without being connected. Going to church, singing songs, being around other Christians, and things of that nature do not keep us connected with God Himself. TRUE fulfillment comes when we are sold out for God. James 4:7-8, “Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. COME NEAR TO GOD AND HE WILL COME NEAR TO YOU. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double minded.” I find myself praying throughout the day, only when I need things. I never take the time during my day to praise him and say “Thanks, Big Papa!” Find somewhere to go and be with God, not to yammer about needing things. • Instant coffee is…

Last month, my wife, mother-in-law and daughter went to a local festival. My wife came back home thrilled about a cup of coffee they had while they were there. Then she told me that this amazing cup of coffee was instant. Well, naturally, I remained quite skeptical, since although I trust my wife, my experiences with instant coffee had, up to that point, been all bad. I did receive a link where I could buy the coffee and many other things, and I did give it a quick look. I didn’t, however, feel inclined to purchase this coffee, because again, I had had only bad experiences with instant coffee in the past. Then, last Thursday, I was invited as a guest to a meeting that took place yesterday, where the shopping portal that sells this coffee and many other things was presented and discussed. I got the chance to taste the coffee first-hand, and found out that all the wonderful things my wife and mother-in-law had said about it were indeed true. The cup of coffee I had was simply amazing!…

Sin, Sickness, Poverty, Fear, Doubt, Worry, Confusion and all that Satan represents, shall not have any dominion over me. I am prospering in my spirit, my soul, my body, and my finances, for I am a liberated person. Jesus said that I would know the truth and the truth shall make me free. I’m currently trying the share button from Add to Any, which allows both sharing and bookmarking on many networks from a single button. Other than the fact that my post title only shows up correctly if you click the button from the post’s page, it seems to work quite well. A tip for screen reader users I noticed that nothing seems to happen if you press enter on the link that says “Share it.” The solution to this problem has so far only been tested with Orca and Firefox 4.x, but you should be able to press enter on the link, press control-home to get to the top of the page, and then press enter again. From there you will be able to tab to the link for the network you want and press enter to go to its share page. Why do you lay out silver and not for bread, and your labour without being satisfied? Listen diligently to me, and eat that which is good, and let your soul delight in fatness. Encline your ears and come to me: hear, and your soul shall live, and I will make an everlasting covenant with you, even the sure mercies of David. Behold, I gave him for a witness to the people, for a prince and a master to the people. • No more black boxes…

I discovered the poster attribute in the video tag, along with the proper ffmpeg command to pull an image from an arbitrary video frame. So the black boxes that once characterized my videos have now been replaced with frames from the videos themselves. My code gets a little longer, but I have a template that I copy and paste from, so it’s still extremely easy to implement, and at least in Firefox 4.0, accessibility to screen readers is much better than with the Flash plugin.

  • In honor of the first birthday of WebM, my HTML5 video page is now up, offering the ability to watch and download the videos I post to The Kyle File. Your browser should automatically display the video players if it can, and if not, it will show you the download link for the video and a link to the version on my Youtube channel. Due to some trouble I’m having with my video editor, only one of my two videos is online and fully functional at the moment, but I hope to have the problem fixed soon. Also, I have an unfortunate correction to report. In an earlier post, I mentioned offering downloads of video files in the mp4 format along with the WebM files. Unfortunately, due to space constraints, I will only be offering WebM files. But don’t dispare. WebM is a format that is becoming more widely supported each day, it will soon be the primary format used by Youtube, and a link to the Youtube version of each video will be included for browsers and devices that don’t yet support WebM, both…

Release the balloons and streamers and cut the cake for a big happy birthday to the WebM project, which turns 1 year old today! Thanks Google for freeing the VP8 video codec for everyone to use and enjoy, which makes this project possible and makes publishing video on the internet easier than ever, and which could even bring software freedom to the attention of the masses. Just one thing though. Hey Google, could you please show my Lift Every Voice and Sing video a little WebM love? It still wants me to install the Flash plugin in order to watch it. I still have the original file I uploaded if you need it. Thanks.

  • The Kyle File adds…

I just found out how extremely easy it is, and how nice it looks, to include an HTML5 player for the audio and video files I post to The Kyle File. I’ll be updating my music page and prior posts shortly, and all future audio or video posts will include an HTML5 player with a fallback to a standard download link. This means that if you have a browser that supports HTML5, you will see a nice-looking player where you will be able to play the file directly in your browser, or you can right-click or navigate to the player and use its context menu to save the file to your computer. The player will automatically determine the file format that is supported by your browser and allow you to play or download it. If you have a browser that doesn't support HTML5, you will notice that there will now be two download links for each file, one for the Ogg Vorbis file and another for the mp3 file, (audio), and WebM and mp4, (video). Otherwise, there will be no difference in how you interact with The…

Well, it’s sort of mine, I guess. I ripped it from two different recipes and put it together so that even I can understand how to cook it. I made this for breakfast this morning and actually didn’t burn down the house or myself. My wife and I both loved it. Ingredients 6 thick slices bread 2 eggs 2/3 cup milk 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon (optional) 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg (optional) 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional) 1/2 teaspoon salt Directions Beat together egg, milk, salt, desired spices and vanilla. Heat a lightly oiled griddle or skillet over medium-high flame. Dunk each slice of bread in egg mixture, soaking both sides. Place in pan, and cook on both sides 45 seconds to 1 minute or until golden. Serve hot with butter and/or maple syrup.

  • Now on GNOME3, and…

So I went ahead and took the plunge and upgraded to GNOME3. My experience has actually not been that bad so far. I did have to upgrade to the latest git version of Orca, because the Mozilla products appear inaccessible to the version of Orca that ships with GNOME. I also have no desktop for some reason in the “fallback” mode, and I can add the main menu applet to my pannel, but I can’t make it completely replace the menu bar in the top left corner that activates when I press alt-f1. However, all these problems are pretty much just minor annoyances to me, since everything else seems to work at least as well as before the upgrade, and I didn’t really use the desktop launchers and icons that much anyway. The desktop will probably become more of a problem when I plug in my mp3 player, but since it shows up in /media, I shouldn’t have a problem with that either. I’m sure I’ll find more bugs, but I’m actually fairly happy with my upgrade decision overall.

This is an update from an earlier post. I decided to repost it in order to share my experience from the beginning. I hope it helps someone. Here goes one more test of Twitterfeed. I may need to try to find a different syndication system, as Twitterfeed has a little trouble publishing to Twitter, but it’s not publishing to Identica at all. Update: 2 hours later This post still hasn’t shown up on Twitter or Identica. It should post every 30 minutes, so it looks like there are multiple problems at once. I guess I just set up my Twitterfeed account at the wrong time. Update: 6 hours later Hey, it finally published. But only Twitter got it. I seriously need an alternative that will take my feed and publish it to both Twitter and Identica in a timely manner. It’s fine if it takes up to an hour, but 6 hours is a bit long. Update: 1 day later I finally found it! Enter dlvr.it, almost exactly what I wanted. It posts to Twitter and Identica usually in 15 minutes or less, and it even gives me…

  • GNOME3

According to an Arch Linux News release, GNOME3 will be moved to the Extra package repository, completely replacing GNOME2. This may happen as early as today or tomorrow, most likely depending on how soon the mirrors synchronize. I am aware that much work has been done to get accessibility features up and running, but I have also read that GNOME3 won’t be fully operational with Orca until the 3.2 release. I just performed what is likely to be my last upgrade before GNOME3 is moved, but I don’t really want to ignore the gnome package group in all future upgrades until the 3.2 release, which could break something, I definitely don’t want to stop all upgrades on my system until 3.2 is released, and I most certainly don’t feel like going distro hopping again, now that I found one I really like. Has anyone reading this tested GNOME3 with Orca? I know that gnome-shell isn’t working well, but does fallback mode work out of the box? What major pitfalls can I expect in this release, and how…

  • That should do it. Now I just need to get someone with eyes to be sure my design looks good. Combining 3 themes may not look as good as it sounds to the screen reader. Lol. And the very small amount of sight I have doesn’t allow me to see more than the fact that I have light text on a dark blue background.

  • An end to the blog…

Up until now, I have maintained two blogs, one at Tumblr and one at Posterous posterous, now defunct, both containing nearly the same content. Both of these blogging sites had their advantages and disadvantages, but the Posterous blog was my primary blog site untill recently. It seems that some people were having trouble downloading files that I posted there, especially on later browsers such as Firefox 4.0. Since I’m all about getting my files out there for all to hear, I decided it would be better to host my files in a different place and link to them as needed. As it turns out, Dropbox allows for this in a very simple and streamlined way. All I need to do is to place the file I want to share in ~/Dropbox/Public and then copy its download link, which I can get from Nautilus when I’m in that folder. I can then link directly to it using Markdown syntax in my post to my blog. Initial tests have been quite successful, producing links in my post that go directly to the file in question…

  • Looks like I may stick with Posterous after all. It handles autoposting much better. I'll just set up a dropbox or something for my files.
