To him that excells. A Psalm of David.
O Lord, you have tried me and known me.
you know my sitting and my rising: you understand my thought afar off.
you examine my paths and my lying down, and are accustomed to all my ways.
For there is not a word in my tongue, but behold, you know it wholly, O Lord.
you shut me in behind and before, and lay your hand upon me.
your knowledge is too wonderful for me: it is so high that I cannot attain it.
Where shall I go from your Spirit? or where shall I flee from your presence?
If I ascend into heaven, you are there: if I lie down in hell, you are there.
Let me take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea:
Yet there shall your hand lead me, and your right hand hold me.
If I say, “Yet the darkness shall hide me,” even the night shall be light around me.
Yes, the darkness does not hide from you: but the night shines as the day: the darkness and light are both alike.
For you have possessed my reins: you have covered me in my mother’s womb.
I will praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderously made: marvelous are your works, and my soul knows it well.
My bones are not hidden from you, though I was made in a secret place, and fashioned beneath in the earth.
your eyes saw me when I was without form: for in your book were all things written, which in continuance were fashioned, when there were none of them before.
How dear therefore are your thoughts to me, O God! how great is the sum of them!
If I should count them, they are more than the sand: when I wake, I am still with you.
Oh that you would slay, O God, the wicked and bloody men, to whom I say, “Depart from me:”
Who speak wickedly of you, and being your enemies, are lifted up in vain.
Do I not hate them, O Lord, that hate you? and do I not earnestly contend with those that rise up against you?
I hate them with a sincere hatred, as they were my utter enemies.
Try me, O God, and know my heart: prove me and know my thoughts,
And consider if there be any way of wickedness in me, and lead me in the way forever.
